Baltimore, Maryland--Residence of William Prydor: February 29,
2008
The ringing of the phone startled him from his thoughts. For the
first time, he wasn't scheduled to be at Uprising, but that would not stop him
from going anyway. After all, if he was needed to cut a quick promo, he'd much
rather be there than having to deal with staff members preparing a satellite
link from his home or from the End of Nowhere, where something could go wrong.
The phone hadn't stopped ringing after three rings, so finally he
picked it up without looking at the caller ID. It was her on the other
end of the line.
'Will, you might want to turn on channel 13.'
'Brandy, what did I--'
'Dammit, Will, trust me on this one! This could mean your career
if not more!'
That got his attention, as she hoped it would. Picking up the
nearby remote, he flipped the TV to WJZ-TV (13), the local CBS network
affiliate. It was the visage of Denise Koch that greeted him with the news that
seemed so urgent.
'Here's what's making headlines tonight...breaking news out of
Portland, Oregon, that has local repercussions. Two hours ago, authorities
reported that NLW wrestler 'The Ice Man' vanished without a trace, his last
known destination being Portland International Airport. Authorities are not
willing to say anything further that could compromise the case but do say that
one of Baltimore's more recent success stories, fellow NLW wrestler William
'The Phoenix' Prydor, is currently wanted for questioning in regards to this
case. As soon as more details are available, he will bring them to you here.
'In other local news, gunfire rippled the streets of Baltimore as
two people wound up dead--'
He had to shut off the TV at this point as he sighed. Forgetting
the phone was still on, he heard her say, 'Will? You all right over there?'
'Y...yeah, I'm fine. Look, thanks for the heads-up, but it looks
like I have a lot to do and not nearly enough time to do it in.'
'I understand. Do what you must.' With that, she disconnected the
call. He paused for a few seconds, gathering his thoughts before dialing a
number on the phone.
'What city and state, please?'
\___(^)___/
'Chief! There's a Will Prydor on the phone for you...would you
like the call here or--'
'I'll take it here. Get a trace running; let's make sure it's the
real deal first.'
At this, the chief picked up the phone as one of his best tracers
started work. 'This is Chief John Lincoln of the Portland Police Bureau. Who is
this?'
He cleared his throat before speaking. 'My name is William James
Prydor of Baltimore, Maryland, commonly known as 'The Phoenix.' I understand
that you wish to speak to me.'
'In regards to what?' Lincoln looked over at his tracer, who
mouthed '10 seconds' to him.
'The apparent abduction of one 'Ice Man,' whose real name is not
known to me.'
'Is that so?' He took another glance at his tracer, and saw the
address and phone number from which he was calling on a sheet of paper. One
look confirmed the identity for Lincoln--he had done his homework ahead of time.
'OK, William...my staff tells me that you're legit, so let's cut to the chase,
shall we?'
'Indeed. I know nothing about what happened. I've been either here
or on my other piece of property since arriving back in Baltimore on the
morning of the 25th.'
'We can confirm that, given your present location. Can you come
here for a face-to-face interview?'
'It will take a day or two to arrange things on my end, Chief
Lincoln. I'll try to expedite the process as best I can.'
'See that you do. The sooner we speak to you, the sooner we can
look into solving this case.'
'A suggestion, if I may. I know that Ice Man has at least one
associate, if not two, that is always around him. Have you contacted them in
regards to this matter?'
'That information is classified, Mr. Prydor.'
'Fair enough. I shall get back in touch with you as soon as I land
in Portland, so you can go about finding the people responsible for this and
leaving innocent folk like me alone. Good day, sir.'
He shut the phone off at this point, his temper having reached a
boiling point. He wasn't lying--it would take a few days to arrange someone to
watch the place for him and the like--but there was more to it than that.
He had a hunch that he would be getting a visitor in the next few
days...likely someone close to Ice Man. Rather than leave whomever it was
without answers, he would stick around long enough to prove his innocence,
answer whatever was needed of him, and figure out just how in the hell he got
into this mess.
And maybe, somewhere in the midst of all of that, he'd get some
answers of his own....
